T he Oath at Raireshwar temple is a particularly significant moment in the history of the Marathas. To attain the goal of HINDAVI SWARAJ,   a young Shivaji set out to Raireshwar temple with his Mavala accomplices to create a memory cherished by Maratha people for generations. Particularly what Shivaji said is as follows:  “गड्यानो  आपला मार्ग ठरला. आपल्या ध्येयासाठी सर्वांनी झटायचे,सर्वांनी खपायचे, सर्वांनी प्राण अर्पण करायलाही तयार व्हायचे. आपले हे ध्येय म्हणजे ‘हिंदवी स्वराज्य’ तुमचे, माझे, साऱ्यांचे स्वतंत्र राज्य स्थापन करायचे. परक्यांची गुलामी आता नको. उठा, या रायरेश्वराला साक्षी ठेवून आपण प्रतिज्ञा करू. स्वराज्यस्थापनेसाठी आता आम्ही आमचे सर्वस्व वाहणार. हिंदवी स्वराज्याच्या रूपाने हे राज्य व्हावे, असे श्रींच्या मनात आहे.  श्रींचे मनोरथ आपण पूर्ण करूया!!” It's English translation is as follows: “Friends, now our path is clear. T he Maharashtra that we know of today was known as Deccan(दख्खन) in the 1600's. This was particularly a difficult time to live as a commoner. Sultan Adilshah controlled most of the Western Maharashtra, while Sultan Nizamshah ruled Central Maharashtra. Adilshah governed the regions with the help of Jahagirdars. The city of Pune and area around it was inherited as a Jahagir by Shahaji Raje Bhonsale, a capable military general of the Adilshahi Sultanate. Rajmata Jijabai, wife of Shahaji, gave birth to Shivaji Raje Bhonsale on 19 February 1630 on the fort of Shivneri near Junnar district, Pune. As a child Shivaji listened to the epic stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata narrated by Rajmata Jijabai. He was trained in swordsmanship by trained and expert swordsmen of the time.
